With embroidery there are no boundaries, everything can be embroidered. There is a pattern for everything and today the technique has come so far that you simply put a picture on the computer and have it printed as an embroidery pattern. On this page, you will also find books with patterns and really good suggestions for the different styles available. But as I said, there are many different techniques, including in the book "Graphic Embroidery", where you can start decorating various practical things in the home, such as cushions, pillows, bags, pots and tea towels. Back in the day, embroidery on clothing was also very common, if you had slipped and ripped the knee of your trousers, it could easily be covered with a fine embroidery or it could just be a beautiful embroidery to uplift a blouse a bit. As I said, only the imagination sets limits here. The book "Embroidery" contains 15 embroidery projects as well as techniques, tips and tricks. The book is divided into two, where the first part includes the 15 projects and the second part demonstrates various techniques. There are sections on materials, tools and much more. The book caters for both beginners and the experienced. The "Embroidery Technique Handbook" is a really exciting guide to well-known and beloved techniques in both classic and experimental embroidery. All the basic steps and their variations have photos and step by step drawings. Specific suggestions are given for suitable materials, for the current sewing technique and for how to transfer pattern and sew according to the diagram. "Sashiko embroidery" is a pattern from Japan and means "small stitch". This type of pattern is otherwise used for sewing or repairing clothes, but with these stitches, you can also make beautiful embroidery patterns. The book provides patterns on how to make greeting cards, table sconces, napkins, pillows, shopping bags and more, so here are a lot of great ideas to get you started.

Permin embroidery on Aida and linen fabric.
It all depends on what you embroider. Permin Aida fabric is cotton fabric with clear squares and is thus the easiest embroidery fabric. The size is stated in number of stitches per piece. cm. For example, 5.4 which is the most common, the lower the number the easier it is to embroider as the squares become larger. A higher number with smaller squares gives finer embroidery. Permin linen is "without squares". The texture is stated in cm. e.g. 10 or 12 cm. The lower the number on the fabric, the easier it is to embroider. Permin linen is for the slightly more practiced, giving a finer result.

But what is embroidery and what can we use it for today? There’s so much to it; it can lead us very far back in history and we have all been around it one way or another, many will probably remember the rye cloth you made in primary school or others have seen their parents or grandparents sit with some form of stramaj. Back in the Bronze Age, when embroidery was used, it could also be a form of status symbol depending on how nicely clothes were embroidered. It also became a kind of education in housework, in the old days it was important for young girls to embroider, they could sometimes be sent out to a rich family where they needed to sew or embroider their clothes. But today we do not use it as much as a status symbol, but the fine threads are still used when decorating priests and bishops.
