Textile paint, do you need to spruce up your T-shirt or make fancy tea towels? With fabric paint, you can spend hours doing just that. We all remember when we used to make potato prints on a pre-washed old T-shirt or grandma's old tea towels. A lot has happened since then, but we still use old T-shirts and tea towels, we just give them a new life. For example, if you have a set of old white bedding, you can mix colors or dye them the same color as your bedspread or wall color.
There is plenty of inspiration to be found all around and we see it a lot in home programs or recycling where they are refreshed with a coat of paint, pillows get a new life, potholders with smart prints made from fun sponges or foam rubber brushes. There are many ways to go about it and it's entirely up to you how you want your design to look.
Don't forget the accessories for your textile paint
When you're most absorbed in what you're doing and completely engrossed in your project, we tend to forget how much paint we can get on our hands and clothes, so we recommend using an apron with or without sleeves or a painting smock if it's a big project you're working on. It's also important to wear gloves or disposable gloves. Textile fabric colors a lot, but also your hands if you don't use gloves, and you'll find them on this site in many different sizes.
After the paint has been applied, remember that for the best effect, the fabric must be washed without fabric softener. When you have finished painting, the material can be heat-fixed for 5 minutes in a 150-degree oven, then it is ready to be washed at 40 degrees in the washing machine.
High-quality fabric paint for clothes or cushions
Fabric paint is a versatile and creative way to transform clothes and textiles, allowing you to create unique designs and personal expressions. Fabric paint can be used to decorate a wide range of textiles, including clothing, cushions, tea towels and potholders. For example, you can update old T-shirts, jeans or jackets by adding colorful patterns, experimenting with different techniques such as splashes, brush strokes or potato prints. Cushions can be made by creating your own unique cushion covers. By painting directly on the fabric, you can personalize the cushions and fit them into your decor and style. We recommend using fabric paint on these materials:
- Cotton
- Viscose
- Wool
As cotton, viscose and wool are natural fibers that have a high ability to absorb paint. This ensures that the color penetrates the fabric and gives a more durable result. As an added bonus, these materials are also softer on the skin than other materials and remain so after the paint has been applied. When the paint is properly fixed (typically by heat treatment), these materials can also be washed without losing color. This is extremely smart, and the stretchable properties of the materials mean that the paint will not crack under even the most extreme movements.
However, fabric paint does not work on synthetic materials such as:
- Acrylic
- Polyester
- Elastane
Although these synthetic materials can be extremely difficult to paint on, there are specialized paints for these types of materials. These paints are specially designed to bond the synthetic fibers better and can therefore be washed without fading. Since these custom paints are made from synthetic colors, they can be used for synthetic materials. So make sure to double check if the paint can be used on synthetic surfaces.
