Jersey fabric is a versatile textile that is characterised by being wonderfully flexible and supple. Since jersey is a stretch fabric, it is ideal for sewing clothes as the texture is comfortable against the skin and easy to create beautiful silhouettes from. Jersey is also a thin fabric, making it ideal for garments such as leggings, t-shirts, tops and undershirts.
Jersey fabrics come in a variety of beautiful colour palettes, and on this page you will find all the many wonderful jersey fabrics we offer. That includes solids, interlock, stripes, bamboo and prints, so there's something for every taste, not to mention project type.
Cotton jersey and viscose jersey - what's the difference?
Jersey gets its iconic stretchiness thanks to its manufacturing method. Rather than being woven, the fabric is knitted from extremely thin yarn. This means that jersey is made up of tiny stitches, which you have to be careful not to accidentally cut with the sewing needle. Jersey comes in a variety of materials and colours, but there are two main categories: cotton jersey and viscose jersey.
Viscose jersey is made from wood fibres and is therefore not a synthetic material. Jersey fabric is characterised by a glossier look with a heavier drape. Although it has more drape, the material itself is cool, making viscose jersey good for summer projects such as skirts, jumpsuits and t-shirts.
Cotton jersey is often better able to hold its shape and therefore has less drape than its sister fabric viscose jersey. This means the fabric is particularly suitable for dresses, for example, where you want the fabric to stand out more.
Good to know about elasticity and sewing jersey fabric
Whichever type of jersey fabric you end up choosing, you're guaranteed a delicious and stretchy material. However, it's worth noting that the elasthane (also known as Lycra) content helps determine exactly how flexible each grade is - the higher the elastane content, the greater the stretchability of the fabric.
When it comes to the sewing itself, it's important that you use rounded sewing needles. That way you avoid making holes in the material, as ordinary sewing needles risk destroying the stitches of the material and thus causing the threads of the fabric to run. You should also bear in mind the elasticity of the fabric. We suggest sewing with special seams as they stretch with the fabric.
