What are fitted cushions?

The name might be a bit confusing, but a fitted cushion is a plain cushion without a cover that you can stuff into your own covers.

One of the easiest things to make yourself is a cushion cover. The shape of a classic cushion is square, which makes it easy to cut the fabric and sew the cushion cover together. It is therefore an ideal project for children, beginners and experienced sewers alike.

With home-made cushion covers, you can use whatever fabric suits your preferences for colours, patterns and textures. Just remember to wash the fabric before cutting and sewing, as fabrics can shrink in the washing machine. You may want to make the cover a little smaller than the mounting pad itself if you prefer a smoother, tighter cover on your cushions.

Remember a good closure on your cushion covers

Depending on your skills in front of a sewing machine, you can make different closures on your homemade duvet cover. Closures are necessary if the cover is to be changeable and washable. You can either make closures with an overlap or with different closure mechanisms such as zips, buttons and ties. If you've invested in good, inexpensive fitted cushions and created a nice cover yourself, you'll obviously want to take good care of them. Both cushions and covers should be washable if you want them to be usable and have a long life. Often, you'll be able to make do with beating your cushions thoroughly and airing them out on a daily basis.
